Description:

Over the period 2000-2022, Danish Centre for Environment and Energy, Aarhus University (DCE), Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (GINR), and Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) have published seven Environmental Oil Spill Sensitivity Atlases (see references below). Together, they cover all coastal and offshore areas within the Greenland EEZ except for areas north of latitudes 77 and 81.5 N on the west and east coast, respectively. The main purpose of the atlases is to provide oil spill response planners and responders with tools to identify resources at risk, establish protection priorities and identify appropriate response and clean-up strategies in case of a marine oil spill. The work has been financed by the Environment Agency for the Mineral Resources Activities (EAMRA), Greenland Government (and its predecessors).

This particular feature class contains logistic features relevant for response efforts in case of a marine oil spill, compiled from all seven atlases. The features include anchor sites, landing sites, potential safe havens and inshore containment sites (along with booming lengths).

DCE and GINR take no responsibility for the anchoring sites and the landing sites, neither in terms of their exact location, nor in terms of their suitability. Thus, these features should be taken only as an indication, and if planning to use a site, appropriate sources/authorities should be consulted (e.g., Greenland Pilot, Naviair, Air Greenland etc.).

A safe haven is a site where unloading and/or stabilisation operations can be carried out on a vessel leaking oil with limited impact on the environment. Small bays and inlets, which can be exclusion boomed and which are situated in areas with low sensitive coasts, qualify for such areas. All indicated sites should be considered only as potential safe havens and should be subject to reconnaissance and consulting locals before use.

Inshore containment sites are locations, where booming operations may be carried out. Each site is associated with an approximate booming length in meters.

The feature class contains the following fields:

LogType_General: The overall type of the logistic feature, used mainly to create a simple symbology.

LogType_Specific: More detailed typology of the logistic features. Thus, for landing sites, the type of landing site is indicated (eg. airstrip, airport, heliport, skiway), and for inshore containment sites, approximate

GoToAtlas: The URL of the Environmental Oil Spill Sensitivity Atlas from which the logistic feature derives.

The original atlases contain much more information on logistics, including detailed access information related to each map sheet.
